Scholarships for Young Musicians
A MISSIONS OUTREACH PROGRAM OF TALMADGE HILL COMMUNITY CHURCH
MISSION
To bring the gift of music to 4th and 5th grade students at Columbus School in Bridgeport, CT, and expose students to its benefits, develop musical skills, and reinforce the role of discipline and commitment in each studentís journey to become a responsible citizen in society.
WHAT IT IS
KEYS (Kids Empowered by Your Support) was founded in 2004 by Rob Silvan, Director of Music at Talmadge Hill Church in Darien, CT.
An arts enrichment initiative that brings the gift of music to 4th, 5th and 6th grade students at Columbus School in Bridgeport, CT, KEYS exposes these students to the benefits of music and provides them the opportunity to develop a life-long love music and the arts.
In addition, KEYS provides keyboards to students who cannot afford to have a piano at home for practicing. At this time, the program includes ten students who are receiving weekly piano lessons from instructors trained in the Suzuki method.
In addition, through a special grant, KEYS has expanded its program to offer students weekly violin lessons.
In addition to enriching these students' lives by giving them exposure to the arts, and music in particular, these lessons complement classroom work by reinforcing the role of discipline and commitment in each student's journey to become a responsible citizen in society.
FUNDING
KEYS operates under the umbrella of the Missions Committee at Talmadge Hill Community Church, which has provided a portion of the program's funding. The church also held a benefit concert in 2005, which raised enough money to carry the KEYS program through the 2005-2006 school year.
An advisory committee has been formed to develop and implement long-range goals in order to be able to provide piano and violin lessons to many more kids at Columbia School and at other schools throughout the Bridgeport area.
